About the Portuguese Yoga Federation

The FPY is a democratic organization with non-profit goal and status of public utility recognized by the Portuguese State. Founded in 2000 and recognized by the Portuguese Government from 2009 with the Public Utility statute, the FPY was born according the impulse of Yoga associations from several Portuguese cities. From the beginning, the FPY has placed the training of Yoga teachers at the center of its priorities. At this moment, there are several courses provided: the 4-year Yoga teacher training course and the specialization courses (Yoga for Children, Yoga for pregnant women, Postpartum Yoga and Yoga for babies, the deepening course of Transmission of the Yoga tradition, with the yogi Walter Ruta). To ensure the quality of these training courses, FPY has developed partnerships with: Human Mobility’s College of Lisbon University; Lusófona University; Senior Health School of Santarém; Birthlight Trust, in England, and with the Italian school named Pramiti.
Also motivated by this training concern and the desire to take Yoga to an ever larger group of people, every year, FPY organizes the following events: Yoga Days in Lisbon and Yoga Festival in Santarém. In summer, inserted in protocols with several Municipal Councils, FPY dynamizes outdoor yoga classes. Some of these protocols are extended to all year and include several activities developed monthly for the community and Yoga classes for Pre-School children. FPY is a full member of the European Yoga Union and also a Communication Team member.

Teacher Training Course

FPY provides a Yoga teachers training course, during 4 years, with 1381 hours of training (791 hours of face-to-face training). In this course, one searches for the association between the East and the West and explores classical and contemporary methods, based on the classic texts of the yogic tradition, with special emphasis on Yoga Sutra and Bhagavad-Gita. Yoga is regarded as a path of self-knowledge, therefore, its physical, mental, psychological and spiritual dimensions are foreseen, and essential practices of Hatha Yoga are deepened. Approaches to Yoga in Pregnancy, Yoga and Mental Health, Yoga for babies and children and Yoga for seniors. Practice and study are grounded in the Yama and Nyama principles. The general objectives of this course are to provide enrolled students knowledge, ability and attitude to conduct Yoga classes and to equip them with tools that contribute to their evolution in the Yoga path and their ongoing formation.

FPY also provides some specialization courses: Yoga for Children, Yoga for pregnant women, Postpartum Yoga and Yoga for babies, the course of deepening the transmission of tradition of Yoga, with the yogi Walter Ruta.
