Yoga and Ayurveda for dealing with anxiety: a Holistic Path to Inner Peace and Stability – Anja Orthmann-Heuser
This talk explores the deep connection between Yoga and Ayurveda in addressing anxiety. Both systems are rooted in a profound understanding of the inner dynamics of body, mind, and life energy – particularly through the interplay of Agni (digestive fire), Prana (life force), and the Maha Gunas (fundamental mental qualities).
From an Ayurvedic perspective, anxiety disorders are often seen as a manifestation of Vata imbalance. Excess Vata can disrupt our ability to properly ‘digest’ experiences, thoughts, and sensory impressions, leading over time to inner restlessness and instability. Mental imbalance is further reflected in an excess of Rajas (activity, agitation) and a deficiency of Sattva (clarity, calm).
Building on this understanding, we’ll develop practical recommendations for a sattvic lifestyle that supports Agni and for a grounding, stabilising yoga practice. These approaches will be presented in the second part of the talk, along with a short, guided experiential session.
The goal of this talk is to offer a deeper understanding of how Yoga and Ayurveda together can provide effective tools for managing anxiety, empowering individuals to support themselves alongside other therapeutic approaches.
